Weeki Wachee Springs is one of Florida’s most iconic and historic roadside attractions – entertaining audiences since 1947. Weeki Wachee is a Seminole Indian word meaning “little spring” or “winding river.” The founder, former U.S. Navy member, Newton Perry invented a method of breathing underwater from a free-flowing air hose supplying oxygen from an air compressor. 18 feet below the spring’s surface, a small theater was built into the limestone so viewers could watch the “mermaids” eat, drink, play sports,  do ballet and perform shows in elaborate costumes under the springs. In addition to the mermaid shows which last about 45 minutes, there are plenty of other things to do at the park. Kayak, canoe, or paddle your way through the crystal clear waters of the springs. Float down the spring on a river boat cruise and see Florida’s natural wild life. Play on the only spring-fed water park in Florida at Buccaneer Bay water park. Encounter Florida’s wild life at one of the wild life shows. Explore the deep caverns below, in Florida’s deepest natural caverns by scuba diving.
