Whether you are a lifelong Floridian, a recent resident, or just here for a visit, the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum offers both an educational and exciting experience. When you enter the rich swamplands of the Big Cypress Reservation, you will be introduced to scenic roads, lush vegetation, and a thriving community of Seminole tribal citizens. Roll down your car windows and soak up the sights, sounds, and smells of the Florida Everglades on your drive to the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum.
Upon arrival, a dynamic five-screen orientation film provides the historical and cultural backdrop for a visit in the galleries, which showcase rare artifacts and life-sized depictions of traditional Seminole practices in 1890s Florida. In addition to the permanent galleries, our museum features temporary exhibit spaces that build on topics relevant to past and present Seminole life.
Beyond the interior galleries visitors discover a mile-long boardwalk through a natural cypress dome. Half-way around the boardwalk you will reach the Ceremonial Grounds and Living Village, a modern take on the historic tourist camps of the early 20th century, wherein you may have the opportunity to meet Seminole artisans who create and sell the beadwork, basketry, wood carvings and patchwork for which they are world renowned. Visitors can gain a deeper understanding of Everglades flora and fauna through interpretive signage along the boardwalk.
No visit to the museum would be complete without a stop in the Museum Store, located near the admissions desk. The Museum Store carries books, DVDs, clothing, and wonderful Seminole and other Native American hand-crafted items.
We hope that you depart the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum with a greater appreciation and understanding of the unique history and culture of the Seminoles, and how that culture thrives today – both within the boundaries of the six Seminole Tribe of Florida reservations and off.
