Last month marked a very special event at Walt Disney World Resort – the arrival of a brand new African elephant calf! For animal and Disney lovers alike, the birth of a new little one always tugs at the heartstrings. But there is something particularly sweet about watching a newborn elephant get to know her family and surroundings for the very first time.
The celebrated event was the first birth of its kind in seven years. The arrival of the adorable baby girl, named Corra, took place on December 13, 2023. This momentous occasion was meticulously arranged as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan, which focuses on responsible breeding of endangered animals in managed care. Currently, Corra is spending quality time behind the scenes at Disney’s Animal Kingdom with her mother, Nadirah.
Corra holds a significant distinction as Nadirah’s first offspring, but what makes this birth even more remarkable is that Nadirah herself was born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in 2005. As a result, Corra becomes the first second-generation calf to be born within the park. Nadirah received guidance and comfort from her sister Luna during her maiden birth. Soon, the calf will have the opportunity to meet her grandmother, Donna, and her aunt, Stella. It is customary for adult females within the herd to contribute to the nurturing of young elephants until they reach independence, usually around 8 years old.
In early 2022, Nadirah conceived naturally and received dedicated care from Disney’s animal care team throughout her pregnancy, which lasted nearly 22 months. The experts, including animal keepers, veterinarians, and scientists, will continue to monitor the mother and baby through post-natal examinations and a bonding period that will last several days. The elephant team at Disney’s Animal Kingdom is observing important moments, such as successful nursing and significant milestones like weight gain, as the pair prepares to join the rest of the herd.
This precious addition to the herd brings hope for the future conservation efforts of these incredible creatures. Through careful planning and dedication, Disney has created a thriving environment for all animals to flourish in.
